Russia launches illegal annexation referendums in Ukraine’s occupied territories

Date:

The authorities of the Ukrainian region of Kherson, under Russian supervision, have denounced that the Russian soldiers present in the area are forcing the population to vote several times in the referendum for accession to Moscow launched by the pro-Russian authorities. has been proposed.

Russia faces the second day of express referendums illegally summoned to annex the occupied territories in Ukraine, given the rapid advance of the Ukrainian army in recent weeks and after summoning part of the Russian population. Moscow thus tries a juggling exercise: to be able to state that it is not Russia that invades Ukraine, but that it is Kiev that is attacking Russian soil.

The votes, which are not recognized by the international community, are taking place without democratic guarantees and under military coercion: they take place between battles in the middle of the war and with the pro-Russian authorities going from house to house armed to vote. .

The authorities of the Ukrainian region of Kherson, under Russian supervision, have denounced that the Russian soldiers present in the area are forcing the population to vote several times in the referendum for accession to Moscow launched by the pro-Russian authorities. has been proposed.

The mayor of the Ukrainian city of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, has assured on his Telegram channel that members of the “election commissions” armed with machine guns have visited a large part of the inhabitants in order to intimidate them and persuade them to vote to join Russia. “There are massively recorded cases of gunmen banging on doors, entering apartments and demanding that they prepare passports. Local residents are told where to put a mark on the ballot paper,” he said.

“A quick pseudo-referendum in apartments and courtyards under the watchful eye of an armed soldier,” the governor of the Lugansk (East) region, Serhiy Haidai, also wrote on his Twitter account.

The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskovyhas put forward that the decision on the inclusion of the Ukrainian territories in Russia after the referenda will be “quick”.

Once the regions are recognized as part of Russia, they will be protected along with other Russian territories, he said.

Kiev, for its part, has defended that there is “not a single legal act called a referendum” in the occupied territories, adding that all that exists is a “propaganda show” at the service of recruiting soldiers for the war.

The parliament of Ukraine on Wednesday approved the inadmissibility of the referendums on accession to Russia proposed by the pro-Russian authorities in these regions.

In this context, NATO has reaffirmed that it will not recognize the results of the votes, as they are “not legitimate” and a “violation of the United Nations Charter”. In this sense, the alliance has called on “all states” to reject these attempts at “territorial conquest” by Russia, stressing that the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya are “Ukraine”.

The accession talks were announced on September 20 by the governments of the self-declared People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk and by the authorities installed by Moscow in the occupied territories of Kherson and Zaporizhia.

Voting continues until the next one September 27.
