Terror hits a Shia school in Kabul

Date:

At least 19 dead on another bloody Friday in the capital

New Bloody Friday in Kabul. Terror hit Afghanistan’s capital again on Muslim holy day, putting the country’s Shia minority back in their sights. At least 19 people were killed after a suicide bomber self-immolated at an education center in Dasht-e-Barchi district, west of the capital and an area where the majority are Hazara, a Shia ethnic group. The operation follows the pattern of previous attacks by the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, a major internal enemy of the Taliban and with sectarian war at the heart of its agenda.

“Students were preparing for an exam when a suicide bomber attacked this school,” said police spokesman Khalid Zadran. In the country, schools close on Friday, but this center held an extraordinary session for students preparing for the jump to college.

The Hazaras were previously targeted by the Taliban, who now have a responsibility to protect them. The IS considers them heretics and has failed to stop a number of attacks that serve the dual purpose of terrorizing this minority and questioning the security situation in the country the Taliban have been talking about since they came to power.

The Dasht-e-Barchi district is a real martyr’s area because it has suffered numerous attacks. One of the bloodiest occurred in 2021, before the Islamists returned to Kabul, and at least 85 people were killed and 300 injured, most of them students, after a jihadist operation against their school.

The United Nations mission in Afghanistan condemned this attack, which is taking place “in the context of the deteriorating security situation” in the country. Organizations such as UNICEF expressed their “dismay” at this “horrific act” against an education center.
