The leader of the right-wing Italian party Fratelli d’Italia and future prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, has strongly criticized Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian regions. The move has “no legal or political value,” Meloni said Friday.
“Vladimir Putin once again demonstrates his Soviet-style neo-imperialist vision that threatens the security of the entire European continent,” Meloni wrote. At the same time, the right-wing politician is calling on the West to unite.
“This latest violation by Russia of the rules for the coexistence of peoples confirms the need for determination and unity of Western democracies,” Meloni said.
With 26 percent of the vote, Meloni’s party emerged as the strongest party in Italy’s parliamentary elections. The Fratelli d’Italia have an alliance with Salvini’s Lega and Forza Italia of ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, but now received 9 and 8 percent of the vote respectively.
