The Royal British Mint unveils the new monarch’s official effigy after Elizabeth II’s death
Carlos III already sees his own reflection in a coin. The Royal British Mint unveiled this Friday the official effigy of the new king who will appear on the coins after Elizabeth II’s death. The portrait of the monarch will be seen on pennies from December, when the 50 pence coins depicting Carlos III will gradually come into circulation, as described by the mint itself.
This new design, created by the sculptor Martin Jennings, shows Carlos III looking to the left, as opposed to how his mother did on coins, thus following the tradition imposed by Carlos II in which each monarch looks in the opposite direction from his predecessor.
The king is depicted without a crown and surrounded by a Latin inscription that translates as “King Charles III, by the grace of God, defender of the faith.” The monarch himself has approved the portrait and has notified the sculptor, the Royal British Mint said in a statement.
“All British coins depicting Elizabeth II remain legal and in circulation. Historically, it is common for coins depicting several monarchs to be in circulation at the same time,” says the Royal Mint, which has minted royal family portraits on coins for more than 1,100 years.
