Extreme weather events – farmers in distress: harvest threatened by heavy rain

Date:

Given the heavy rainfall in large parts of Austria, the situation is catastrophic, especially for farmers. The extreme weather conditions have caused a total damage of 250 million euros so far this year. The harvest that has not yet been harvested is now in great danger…

The persistent rain in large parts of Austria is causing many farmers to worry about their remaining harvest. Crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, corn, soybeans and pumpkins are particularly at risk according to the hail insurance and could suffer considerable damage from heavy rainfall.

250 million euros in damage already this year
There is also the risk of wind gusts damaging glass and foil houses and hail protection nets. This year’s extreme weather conditions have already caused significant economic damage.

At the beginning of September, the total damage to Austrian agriculture amounted to 250 million euros. Of this, 150 million euros was due to drought damage, while the remaining 100 million euros were caused by frost, hail, storms and floods.

Floods destroyed thousands of hectares
The June 2023 flood proved particularly devastating, flooding over 22,000 hectares of agricultural land, including 14,000 hectares of arable land, 7,000 hectares of grassland and 1,000 hectares of fruit and vegetable fields.

Current weather forecasts give little reason to hope for an early improvement. In many regions of Austria, precipitation amounts of 100 to 200 millimeters are expected by the weekend, although locally considerably higher values are possible. The focus of the rain will shift from the south of the country on Thursday to the east on Friday.

Persistent extreme weather events highlight the increasing climate-related challenges for agriculture. To ensure long-term food security and economic stability in the agricultural sector, rapid adaptation strategies and protective measures are essential.
