In connection with the International Day of the Elderly, the group of pensioners has taken to the streets of the four Basque capitals to demand decent pensions, reminding Basque institutions that “rights do not expire with age”.
The groups of retirees demonstrated this afternoon in the Basque capitals, on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of the Elderly, demanding a public, close-knit and quality social and health care. Likewise, they have reminded the institutions that “rights do not expire with age”.
At the demonstration in Bilbao, which started after noon from Plaza Elíptica behind a banner that read “No to Osakidetza’s austerity”, participants called for “decent pensions” and for public health.
Jon Fano, one of the group’s spokespersons, explained that in Euskal Herria there are 225,000 retirees with a pension of less than 1,000 euros, and eight out of ten of them are women. For this reason, it has once again emphasized the need to establish a minimum government pension of 1,080 euros.
Hundreds of those present also demanded a decent pension at the mobilization of Pamplona. Navarrese retirees have demanded that pensions be topped up as measures to cope with rising energy costs and mitigate climate change.
