Austria’s heaviest pumpkin weighed 663.9 kilograms in the Tulln garden in Lower Austria on Saturday. Just like last year, breeder Friedrich Melka from Ried am Riederberg (district Tulln) became state champion.
“The pumpkin giants are the result of the great passion and perseverance that all participants have invested in their ‘Bluza’ over the past few months,” summed up Deputy Martin Eichtinger (ÖVP). About 1,500 guests attended the weigh-in at the twelfth edition of the Austrian Giant Pumpkin State Championship.
According to a broadcast, Melka overcame about 40 competitors with the “Atlantic Giant” variety. In total, almost ten tons of vegetables from six federal states weighed in.
Second place went to Christoph Zeller from Pichl near Wels (Wels-Land district), whose pumpkin weighed 591.9 kilograms. Third place again went to Melka. His “Bluza” of the “Squash” variety weighed 558.4 kilograms. The record of 735.7 kilos set in 2020 has remained untouched.
