345 kilograms – Inzersdorf: delivery of khat disguised as tea

Date:

If the term doesn’t mean anything to you: Khat are the leaves of the shrub of the same name, which are chewed in the mouth and therefore have an intoxicating effect. And are therefore banned in Austria and other European countries.

If khat is crushed, it can easily pass as tea. This is exactly how the attempt to smuggle the drug through customs at Vienna airport was made. But experienced tax officials threw a spanner in the works for the criminals. The delivery – 30 boxes with a total weight of 345 kilograms – was intercepted. The hot goods were reported as matcha tea, which would make its way to the federal capital by plane from Tel Aviv.

“Dschango” had the right nose
The drug, which comes mainly from East Africa and the Arab world, has now also appeared at the postal distribution center in Inzersdorf. Here the sniffer dog “Dschango” proved that he had the right nose – during the routine check twelve kilograms of khat were discovered and confiscated.

“Through their experience, our customs officers were made aware of the shipments,” explains Treasury Secretary Magnus Brunner, “so that they could protect the health of our population by primarily preventing the smuggled and illegal narcotics from circulating. come.”
