“We’ve never seen anything like it!” – Animal rights activists are shocked by the condition of more than 30 cats living with overwhelmed owners in the Lower Austrian district of Mistelbach.
Lying on their side, motionless, sores in their eyes or gums, heads crooked from a middle ear infection: the cats rescued a few days ago from a house in the Mistelbach district were in a frightening condition. “We have never experienced anything like this”, the employees of animal shelter Dechanthof are shocked.

An impending eviction got the ball rolling. Because the tenant wanted to take her cats with her, the official veterinarian was called in. He immediately ordered the removal of the more than 30 animals. The completely overwhelmed owner was reported.
“Far beyond our borders”
The Dechanthof, which currently cares for 159 cats alone, is facing a major problem in accepting the animals. “This case has catapulted us far beyond our borders,” said director Gabriele Bachmayer. After all, according to the current status, all rescued velvet paws should survive. However, most of them require veterinary treatment several times a week.
Bachmayer estimates this will likely result in costs in the higher four-digit range for the animal shelter. “As is often the case in such cases, full repayment is not expected,” says Bachmayer, who is therefore asking for financial support.
