Transit via – Gazprom: gas flows to Italy again

Date:

Russian energy giant Gazprom resumes gas exports to Italy via Austria after deliveries were suspended this weekend due to regulatory issues. Gazprom and Italian customers have found a solution for gas sales following the rule changes in Austria, the company announced on Wednesday. Italian energy giant Eni also confirmed the resumption of gas deliveries via Austria.

“The Austrian operator agreed to confirm LLC Gazprom Export’s ‘transport nominations’, which will allow the resumption of Russian gas deliveries through Austria,” Gazprom said, according to Italian media.

The Kremlin-controlled company announced on Saturday that gas transit through Austria had been suspended after the Austrian grid operator refused to confirm so-called nominations for the transport or delivery volume planned by Gazprom. According to Italian media, the share of Russian gas in Italian imports is currently around 10 percent, while the share from Algeria and the Scandinavian countries has risen sharply.

Guarantees of 20 million euros
Since October 1, no Russian gas has flowed through Austria to Italy. The reason for this is changes in the rules in Austria that came into effect on this date and require a security deposit for gas transit. In concrete terms, this concerns guarantees of 20 million euros, the head of the Italian gas importer Eni, Claudio Descalzi, announced on Monday. He promised that Eni would take over this bail. Therefore, the problem must be solved in the short term.
