Following the serious yacht accident off the coast of Sicily, the family of British billionaire Myke Lynch has spoken out for the first time. They thanked the emergency services after the bodies of the tech magnate and his daughter (18) were recovered. The investigation is for manslaughter – according to the chief prosecutor it could also be murder.
“We thank the Italian Coast Guard and everyone who contributed to the rescue,” reads the statement released by the family via Italian media. The relatives are devastated and ask that their privacy be respected.
Prosecutor: It could be murder
The responsible prosecutor said at a press conference on Saturday morning that an investigation into manslaughter has been opened after the accident with seven deaths on the ship Bayesian. The chief prosecutor, Ambrogio Cartosio, further stated that the tragedy could also be a case of “homicide” – the accident could have been caused by “inappropriate behavior”. He added, however, that “this is actually only the beginning of an investigation.”
The Public Prosecution Service explains that the passengers who died on the ship were probably asleep at the time of the accident. Therefore, they could not have saved themselves. Which puzzles investigators: Five bodies were found in a cabin that ‘was not theirs’. What that meant, we do not yet know. “We have no idea why they were all found in the same cabin.”
Shipyard: Human error led to accident
The head of Italy’s Sea Group, owner of the Perini Navi shipyard that built the Bayesian, is convinced that human error led to the accident. The crew made a series of “indescribable, unreasonable mistakes.” Construction defects have been ruled out. The Perini Navi shipyard praised the Bayesian as “unsinkable.”
The ship’s yet-to-be-found black box could provide new insights. So far, investigators have released few details that could provide clues to the cause of the tragedy, such as whether hatches were left open, allowing water to flow into the ship, or whether the lifting keel was raised, making the yacht more unstable.
In any case, the recovery of the megayacht from a depth of 50 meters is likely to take a long time; experts estimate it could take eight weeks. “The highest priority is to get the boat back,” a prosecutor said at the news conference.
The last body did not recover until after five days
The 56-meter luxury yacht sank early Monday morning during a heavy storm. It is said that a cyclone hit the area. Within a very short time, the floating vessel disappeared to the bottom of the sea – 15 people were able to free themselves from the ship in time and were rescued. Only after five days of searching, only the last body could be found in the ship’s hull.
