French stars cut their hair in solidarity with Iranian women

They all cut their hair, while the song ‘Bella Ciao’ is played in the background, performed in Persian by the Iranian singer Gandom.

“The Iranian people, starting with the women, are demonstrating by risking their lives. Those people only want access to the most essential freedoms. These women, these men, ask for our support,” these French stars explain in a post on Instagram. “It is impossible not to denounce this terrible repression time and again. We have decided to heed the call which they do to us by cutting a few locks as well,” they add.

Actress Julie Gayet thinks it is important that Iranian women know that “they are not alone”. “Silence can be worse than violence,” Gayet adds. The actress, who is married to former French President François Hollande, explained in statements to the France Inter network that with this video they want to “show solidarity” and “send a signal to say: ‘we are here’. I hope (Iranian women) can see it somehow.”

Swedish MEP Abir Al-Sahlani also cut her hair while standing in front of the lectern during a speech at the European Parliament. Cutting a lock of hair is a symbolic way of showing solidarity with Iranian women.
