The Executive Board is facing a massive retirement: about a quarter of the civil servants will resign in the coming years and the search for replacements is already in full swing.
It’s not the first time the police have been desperate for new recruits. As early as the 1970s, about half of Vienna was covered with posters promoting the law enforcement job.
It was then still an exclusively male profession, for “boys” between 18 and 30 years with a minimum height of 1.68 meters. Gender, height and age no longer matter these days, but aspiring police officers still have to go through a demanding admission process.
Ad appearance increased in social media
The number of employees in the executive branch is currently higher than ever, but with an approaching wave of retirement, new colleagues are now being sought, especially on social media.
The accompanying videos – including those on the TikTok platform – have already been clicked millions of times. The more than 1,000 reactions, more than 8,000 followers and 30,000 positive reactions within a month show the interest in the profession, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
The campaign was initially focused on Vienna, but will be rolled out across Austria in the coming weeks. On this occasion, the advertising ambassadors then and now came together for a lively exchange of experiences, as the photo (above) shows.
“Police officers enjoy the greatest confidence of the people,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, who promoted the “exciting, challenging and varied job”.
