Narrow driveways, electric shock devices, heat and transport routes that last for weeks: Ann-Kathrin Freude of the “Association Against Animal Factories” (VGT) has observed animal shippers in Spain in their filthy business and berates the dairy farming system, which gets rid of male calves of waste products. The interview:
Crown: You went to the sea in Spain this summer – but not to relax.
Ann Kathrin Freude: That’s right, I spent four weeks with a team in Cartagena investigating how thousands of calves are loaded onto ships in Spain and exported to the Middle East – calves coming from EU countries. Animal transporters are constantly driving into the harbor and during loading the animals are driven into the ship with electric shock absorbers and batons from the ramp. The animals are scared and usually don’t want to get into the ship. These shipments often take days. A legal mistake. Loading ships can take forever, even if the animals are even longer in the ship. And the ships can also sail endlessly across the sea – unlike transport by truck. Even these regulations are still too lax.
