California drug detectives dealt a major blow to the infamous Mexican Sinaloa cartel: Detectives seized nearly 1,600 pounds of intoxicating crystal meth and 66 pounds of cocaine on Wednesday in the small town of Norco.
The researchers made a new record find. The Mexican Sinaloa cartel is said to be behind the smuggling of the synthetic drug. The street value of the seized drug meth is estimated at $33 million.
Every year, powerful so-called cartels smuggle large quantities of drugs across Mexico’s roughly 3,200-mile northern border into the United States. In 2020, 1.3 tons of crystal meth were seized in Mexico – 486 percent more than the year before. The amount was increased again in 2021.
Drugs are about 50 times stronger than heroin
Methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth (also simply called “meth” or “ice”), is an insidious drug: it’s just as addictive as heroin, but about 50 times stronger than heroin. Meth is one of the fastest destructive narcotics of all. It is driving the opioid crisis in the US, which kills tens of thousands every year.
