Provincial Councils of Bizkaia are implementing a package of measures to support the freight transport sector worth 5.6 million euros, including discounts and rebates on toll rates from 1 January 2023.

In this way, an average rate reduction of 10% will be applied to the toll roads AP-8 and Supersur and new discounts will be determined for frequency of use and type of engine on toll roads.

The new measures were announced this Thursday at a press conference in Bilbao by the Commissioner for Infrastructure and Territorial Development, Imanol Pradaleswho explained that the aim is to help the transport sector in Bizkaia increase competitiveness, cope with digital and energy transformations, contribute to the achievement of the decarbonisation targets and mitigate the impact of the energy crisis .

Of the proposed economic measures, from January 1, 2023, a 10% reduction will be applied to the tariffs on the AP-8 and Supersur highways for type I and type II heavy vehicles, to help alleviate the cost increases for the sector , derived of the context of global uncertainty, the invasion of Ukraine and the “tensions” in global supply chains, explains Imanol Pradales.

Discounts for frequency of use and motor type

On the other hand, new discounts will be formulated for frequency of use and type of motor, which will also take effect on January 1, 2023.

A decision is already pending for this in which discounts from the 13% by frequency of usemaximum percentage allowed by the European Commission based on a minimum number of transits.

This measure has been applied exclusively in Supersur and will be extended to all toll roads in the area next year, including new roads where use is paid for trucks over 3.5 tons.

Similarly, discounts will be applied for less polluting motorization types with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of road freight transport, in favor of the most efficient vehicles.

In particular discounts from the 25% for electric, hybrid and gas-powered heavy vehiclesvehicles with O and ECO label of the DGT classification, of the 20% for EURO 6 heavy vehicles and from 15% for EURO 5 heavy vehicles.
