The death of another young woman has sparked a stir among supporters of the protests in Iran. Police said the body of 17-year-old Nika Shakarami was found last week in a building in central Tehran and taken to the coroner’s office. Since then, there have been conflicting statements about her death.
The case also caused a stir on social media on Thursday. Relatives claimed the young woman had been arrested and killed by the Secret Service. Police, on the other hand, said Shakarami had fallen from a high-rise building, according to Tahsim news agency, and that her body was not discovered by neighbors until the next day.
Police also rejected allegations that Shakarami’s death was linked to the current protests. At the autopsy of the body, the coroner found no gunshot wounds, but fractures that indicated a fall.
“Dead Because She Wanted To Live Free”
German SPD politician Sawsan Chebli tweeted a video (see tweet below) intended to show Shakarami on Thursday, urging her not to be forgotten. “Nika Shakarami was tortured and is now dead because she wanted to live free,” Chebli wrote.
The ongoing demonstrations in Iran were triggered by the death of Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini in mid-September. The moral police had her arrested for her alleged “un-Islamic outfit”. She fell into a coma and died in a hospital on September 16. The police deny the use of force.
