Bus fuss – crowds on the way to school and angry parents

Date:

There are still complaints about overcrowded school buses in Burgenland. Instead of taking public transport, the students are now switching to ‘parent taxis’.

Full buses, children left behind and stressed bus drivers – as reported, there were problems with the school buses during peak hours. The situation may not have improved everywhere since the start of the new school year. For example in Steinbrunn.

Two out of three buses full
On Wednesday, two of the three buses that run through the city in the morning were very full. The third offers more space, but leaves so late that the students would not be in class on time.

Some parents describe their children being abandoned: “My daughter was not allowed on the bus because it was full. The door was simply closed and my daughter remained standing. If it wasn’t for me, she wouldn’t even have come to school that day.”

No chance of space
“Once you get into the new settlement, there’s no chance of a seat, but rather crowded. In Steinbrunn Ort the children are already pecking at the windshield”, other parents are annoyed. Sometimes the children get sick because of the narrow-mindedness. On the way back from Eisenstadt there are the same problems.

Andreas Posch of Kinderfreunde Steinbrunn is campaigning to improve the situation. Due to the problems with the buses, some parents drive their children to school and pick them up again.

It needs offers
“I think that in addition to child safety and the guarantee for parents that their children are at school and back home on time, the idea of climate justice and support for the transition from car to public transport is becoming an issue.” . And that requires well-functioning and customer-friendly public transport services,” says Posch.

The Verkehrsverbund Ostregion (VOR) points out that there are always extreme peaks at the beginning of the school and that all buses that are available are therefore on the road. Of course, we always check where an adjustment is necessary.

Standing does not count as a bottleneck
In the Wimpassing case reported by the “Krone” there were no more complaints. The common complaints, such as at the beginning of the school year, have also disappeared. A VOR can only intervene if there are capacity problems, according to a spokesperson. If passengers have to stand, that does not automatically mean a bottleneck.

The buses have a capacity of approximately 75 passengers, including standing places. If there are any issues, it is important to name the bus line that is specifically affected so that a response can be given.
