Get under control – Making a call while driving prevented serious fraud

Date:

A pensioner (78) from East Tyrol owes it to a police check that she was not released by scammers of more than 100,000 euros. The woman was on the phone while driving…

Fate probably was good for the 78-year-old, who received a call Thursday afternoon from an anonymous number on her landline. “The caller pretended to be a detective and told the woman that her daughter was involved in a traffic accident and that a little girl was killed,” the alleged police officer said. Since the daughter of the Lienz woman is said to be in custody, a bail of several tens of thousands of euros would have to be paid to the court in Bischofshofen in Salzburg to free her.

Traveling with gold bars
“The woman replied that she didn’t have that much money in the house and should consult her bank adviser. Then the stranger asked if she might have some gold reserves in the house,” said an official. The retiree said yes and announced the number of gold bars and their weight on the phone.

Calling without a hands-free device
While the 78-year-old went to Bischofshofen with the gold bars worth more than 100,000 euros, she kept in touch with the alleged detective via mobile phone, who urged her not to hang up. Because the woman from Lienz was on the phone in the car without a hands-free device, a police patrol on Drautalstraße near Kleblach-Lind noticed her and stopped the vehicle.

“During the check, the woman remained on the phone and told the officers that she spoke to the detectives,” according to the real police. The retiree handed the cell phone to the police officers, who answered “Steinfeld Police.” The stranger immediately hung up.
