From today, Friday evening at 10 pm to Sunday at 4 pm, the Kaisermühlentunnel in Vienna will be closed in both directions on the A22. The reason: the renewal of the controls in the 2150 meter long tunnel. It is also not possible to continue driving in the same period the following weekend.
“With these measures, we bring the control components of the Kaisermühlen tunnel to the latest state of the art,” said Asfinag team leader Gerhard Hudecek in a broadcast. These components control all functions in the tunnel and coordinate them with each other.
Sensors must be turned off
“A lot of sensors have been installed in the Kaisermühlen tunnel. For example, they adjust the brightness in the tunnel to the outdoor area, or measure the CO content in the tunnel and, if necessary, regulate the ventilation fully automatically.” All of these sensors, as well as the associated hardware, should be disabled during the upgrade work. It is therefore not possible to keep the tunnel open to traffic during this time. Asfinag is investing around 1.3 million euros in the new security software and hardware.
A signposted diversion has been put in place for both weekend closures:
- Southeast Tangent (A23) towards A22 Stockerau: Via the Handelskai junction and the B14 Handelskai to Brigittenauerbrug – there you return to the A22 towards Stockerau.
- A22 towards the southeastern tangent (A23) Kaisermühlen junction: Via the Brigittenauerbrücke exit and the B14 Handelskai to the A23 Handelskai junction – there you can return to the A23 towards the Kaisermühlen junction
