Claims to the Diputación and employers “equality of working conditions and a decent proportion” for the 5,000 workers who make up the staff of the centers.
The LAB union has declared a seven-day strike (October 26 and 27, November 17 and 18 and December 14, 15 and 16) in old people’s homes in Bizkaia, to “require from the Provincial Council and employers the equality of working conditions and a fair ratio (female employees for each resident)).
According to the union, the situation of more than 5,000 workers in housing in Bizkaia has “only worsened, the privatization service imposed by the Diputación is suffocating the workforce, making working conditions precarious and failing to care for residents.”
According to LAB “The situation in homes is intolerable, and the current proportions are inhumane. Our elderly have to share a room with what this means from loss of their privacy, they are not guaranteed a daily shower, nor that breakfast or dinner given at acceptable times, delays in changing diapers or in attitude changes… and we could go on. Before you were a person you are now 15 minutes“.
Meanwhile, the employees charge “we charge approx 50% less than a civil servant that does our own job. We must add that with the loss of purchasing power in the past two years we are about 300 euros a month poorer.”
Faced with the “zero will” to negotiate between employers and the provincial council, and after last year’s demonstrations and strikes, LAB opens a new “battle cycle” with seven days of strike for the entire housing sector in Bizkaia on October 26 and 27, November 17 and 18 and December 14, 15 and 16.
