A sabotage paralyzes the railway network in northern Germany

Date:

The incident comes two weeks after the unexpected leaks in the gas pipeline connecting that part of the country to Russia

Germany’s national train company, Deutsche Bahn, has attributed the cause of the paralysis of much of northern Germany’s rail traffic to sabotage this Saturday, although most services have already been restored. “Due to the sabotage of vital cables for train traffic, Deutsche Bahn shut down traffic in the north for almost three hours this morning,” the railway company reports.

Security forces authorities have already launched an investigation into what happened, German public television ARD said. The problem is located in the malfunction of the GSM-R digital radio system used to communicate with each train with the control centers.

The incident affected long-distance trains and led to delays and cancellations across the north of the country. It also affects commuter trains in Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.

“Operations will gradually resume, but there are still cancellations and delays due to the incident,” private operator Metronom reported on Twitter. Metronom operates several regional routes.

Deutsche Bahn has announced that affected travelers can change their ticket for a later date or request a refund directly.

This incident takes place more than two weeks after the sabotage against the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea, between Russia and Germany. After that problem, the German government had strengthened the protection of its most important infrastructures.
