The US State Department has announced the formation of a new unit to investigate Russian war crimes in Ukraine. The agency is charged with “collecting, analyzing and disclosing evidence of war crimes and other atrocities committed by Russia in Ukraine,” the ministry said on Tuesday.
The information must therefore come from publicly and commercially available sources, such as internet platforms and satellite imagery, and be processed for civil and criminal proceedings. The observatory will set up an online platform to help “refute Russia’s disinformation efforts and expose grievances”. In addition to the ministry, universities and technology companies are also involved.
International Criminal Court sent dozens of investigators to Ukraine
According to the Ukrainian government, it has already documented thousands of war crimes committed by the Russian armed forces in the three-month war of aggression. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has sent 42 investigators to Ukraine to investigate the allegations. According to ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, this is the largest investigative team since the court began its work in 2002.
