In the hands-on supermarket Mila in Vienna, the customer is a determining factor.
If you want to do your shopping, you have to lend a hand yourself: “Mila”, Austria’s first hands-on supermarket, is located on Haberlgasse in Ottakring. The Graetzeloase opened its modest doors in May this year and has been delighting Viennese organic lovers from all over ever since.
The visionaries of the future created their idea in groups of eight: “We are making a supermarket as a social space that brings organic products to the people at fair prices,” founder David Jelinek said in an interview. Six hundred members now work together in Haberlgasse and prove that it works! The concept is as simple as it sounds: join the Mila hands-on shop, work in the supermarket, help determine the range and buy regional products at fair prices.
Everything for everyday use
The members are on site two and a half days a week. The range includes everything needed for everyday use: from different types of cheese and milk to fresh fruit and vegetables to chocolate and even washing up liquid and shampoo are available. In the mature version, Mila could offer up to a thousand different regional and fair products – this saves the visit to conventional supermarkets.
