Two men inflicted unbelievable torment in the Krobatin barracks in St. Johann im Pongau (Salzburg). The duo – a soldier and a civilian – shot the animal a total of seven times. After hours of excruciating pain, the soldier killed the badly injured wild animal the next day. This is the description of whistleblowers who contacted the “Krone” about the case.
Shot multiple times
The badger had previously fallen into the pit of an obstacle course and was unable to get out. The chief of the hunting and hunting group had advised by telephone that a long piece of wood be placed in the two-metre-deep pit so that the badger could be used as a boarding aid. Instead, the soldier in charge notified an acquaintance. Although he is a hunter himself, he is not responsible. The man brought his small-bore rifle with him and fired several times at the tie, which was trapped in the pit six feet deep and ten feet wide.
After several attempts, the soldier took over the rifle and pulled the trigger himself. In total, the men fired seven shots at the defenseless animal. The ordeal would not end until the next day, when the soldier finally killed the badger. The animal had been in the bloodstained pit for twelve hours.
The military regretted the incident on Wednesday. Those involved have been interviewed. Those involved stated that the tie was “apparently dead” after the shots. The soldier only hit the predator on the head the day after the shots “for his own safety”.
For the army spokesman for Salzburg, Major Rene Auer, it is clear: “The Austrian army deeply regrets the incident. In short, the protection of animals is particularly important for the Austrian armed forces, as the work and care of the animals being entrusted is a priority for several units of the military.”
For state hunting master Maximilian Mayr-Melnhof, without knowing the specific case, it is clear: “An animal’s suffering must be ended immediately. Hunting is usually not allowed in a fenced area, such as a barracks.”
