Helicopter Manhunt – Escape From Control: Tugboat Rams Police Car

Date:

On Tuesday, a tractor on the Ostautobahn (A4) near Göttlesbrunn (Lower Austria) ran into a police car while fleeing a check. The car, which was carrying eight Syrians and four Turks, stopped after about 500 meters. Two suspected smugglers fled into a forest. A search with a helicopter and service dogs turned up nothing. The police car was badly damaged, but no one was injured.

At about 8 a.m. shortly after the Nickelsdorf border crossing in Burgenland, the driver evaded a check and continued on in the direction of Vienna. At the Bruckneudorf junction, the transport was noticed again, at Göttlesbrunn the officials tried to stop the car.

The driver steered his car sideways into a police car, police said. The National Criminal Investigation Department of Lower Austria has taken over the investigation. The eight Syrian citizens applied for asylum.

Another arrest
In another case of smuggling, a 42-year-old, who allegedly carried out a transport from Slovakia to Austria, is in custody in Korneuburg prison. The Syrian was arrested on Sunday morning during an entry check in Hohenau ad March (Gänserndorf district). In the vehicle were four compatriots aged 18 to 27 who, according to their statements, paid 800 euros per person for towing. They applied for asylum. The 42-year-old suspect did not confess.

“This case shows how important controls are also at the Slovakian border. The smuggling mafia is constantly changing their routes. We have to be faster than the criminals. We will consistently continue to fight against the ruthless traffickers,” Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) said as follows. Controls at the border with Slovakia came into effect on September 29. The measure was recently extended until October 28.
