Germany delivers ‘Iris-T’ anti-aircraft defense system to Kiev to deal with Russian bombing campaign

Date:

Ukraine will be the first country with weapons that even the federal army doesn’t have yet

Ukraine has received Germany’s first “Iris-T” anti-aircraft defense system, coinciding with the Russian bombing that has suffered that country’s cities since the beginning of the week. A spokesman for the Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, confirmed on Tuesday that the enemy missile and aerial equipment intervention system is already in the hands of the Ukrainian military. The ‘Iris-T’, a self-propelled system with eight rocket launchers developed in Germany by the company Diehl Defense, is the most modern anti-aircraft defense system in this country. Its missiles can hit targets at an altitude of 20 kilometers and a distance of 40 kilometers. The system consists of three vehicles: an eight-axle heavy truck with shuttle, a mobile radar unit and a command unit.

With the delivery of the first system, the Scholz government is fulfilling the promise made in June last year of the rapid delivery of modern anti-aircraft guns. The delivery even came a month ahead of schedule as it was announced for November. German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht stressed that the other three systems that Germany plans to deliver to Ukraine will be shipped as soon as possible. The ‘Iris-T’ will be tasked with fundamentally protecting the civilian population by activating itself to repel Russian missile attacks as registered today. Scholz stressed that the system will help protect major cities from air strikes.

The range of German anti-aircraft missiles is greater than that of light missile systems such as the shoulder-fired ‘Stinger’, of which Germany has sent several hundred to Ukraine. The ‘Iris-T’ is so modern that it has not yet been delivered to the Bundeswehr, the German army, and Ukraine will be the first country to release it. This first-delivered unit was initially intended for Egypt, whose government has resigned in favor of the country attacked by Russia. The other three systems promised by Germany to Ukraine are in the production phase and will be delivered once production is completed.
