The French government decided today to force the opening of the two ExxonMobil refineries that have been halted by a strike that extends to other TotalEnergies and causes shortages in 30% of the country’s gas stations.

The French Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, announced during the monitoring session to the government in the National Assembly that the “essential personnel for the operation” of the ExxonMobil Refineriesafter yesterday, monday, an agreement was signed between the management and various unions.

For the prime minister, who has said that “you need to know how to end a strike”, the administrative reopening has been legitimized because “a difference of opinion over salary does not justify blocking the country”.

The Executive has chosen to treat differently the situation of the ExxonMobil refineries, at Notre Dame de Gravenchon (northwest) and Fos sur Mer (southeast), of the three TotalEnergies that will also be shut down.

In this second case TotalEnergies reiterated on Monday that it is open to tackle salary negotiations from this October, when they were scheduled for November, but that once the strikes are over.

Borne has acknowledged that the supply situation at gas stations is “difficult”, with 30% of all stations in the state missing at least one type of fuel, and “in some places it is unbearable”.

The fuel shortage due to stoppages at the refineries that started two weeks ago has led to price increases at petrol stations.
