Joint statement – G7 countries want to hold Putin to account

Date:

The G7 governments want to hold Russian President Vladimir Putin and other people responsible for the war to account. They announced this on Tuesday during an online meeting of heads of state and government. “Arbitrary attacks on innocent civilians” are a war crime, a joint statement said.

“We condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms (…). We will hold President Putin and those responsible to account. We reiterate that any use of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons by Russia would have dire consequences,” the G7 leaders said. At the same time, they emphasized that they were not a party to the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also attended the virtual meeting and called on the G7 governments to help Ukraine build an air defense system against Russian missiles. They need to step up their efforts and support his country financially. “Millions of people will be grateful to the G7 for such assistance. The Russian leader, who has reached the end of his rule, still has scope for further escalation,” Zelenskyi said. This is “a danger to all of us”.

German government again supplied weapons
The German government promised Ukraine four air defense systems at the beginning of June. According to a “Spiegel” report, the first would have been transferred near the Polish-Ukrainian border. According to the government, the IRIS-T SLM is the most modern air defense system in Germany.

Further air defense systems will come from the US, as President Joe Biden promised in a phone call.
