Strict corona measures are now in force in major Chinese cities: After the number of infections rose to the highest level since August after a week of vacation in early October, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Xian and other megacities in the People’s Republic were forced to act. Some schools, sites and attractions were closed.
In total, authorities reported locally transmitted infections on October 10, 2089, the highest number since August 20. The holiday time in the “Golden Week” on the occasion of the founding of modern China is traditionally also travel time.
Two tests a week required
In the economic metropolis of Shanghai with its 25 million inhabitants, 28 locally transmitted infections were counted. That was the fourth consecutive day of double-digit growth. To avoid a lockdown like the one seen in April and May, which had caused much resentment, authorities have ordered that people be tested twice a week until November 10. Previously, only once a week was required.
China is pursuing a zero-covid strategy to prevent outbreaks. Since the second half of 2020, the measures have ensured that the virus is largely under control.
