“#something is wrong” – campaign against violence against women causes a stir

Date:

Strong poster motifs can be seen all over Tyrol as part of the Women Against Rape Association’s “#something wrong” campaign. These sometimes cause heated discussions.

Violent crimes against women are discussed. The posters by the three artists Aldo Giannotti, Stefanie Sargnagel and Kateřina Šedá deal with different aspects of gender-specific violence. Various motifs have been made for Tyrol. In all their diversity, they all use a sarcastic sense of humor that allows them to talk about this topic in a direct and complex way.

You want to start discussions, create awareness and initiate transformative processes. “The posters are annoying because, unlike advertisements, they cannot be clearly assigned and yet convey a clear message: Multiple discrimination, sexism and violence against women concern us all,” said Katharina Hölbing of the Women Against Rape Association, “ sexual violence in particular is often taboo – and that, although or because the number of those affected is high”. The posters can be seen in the public spaces of towns and villages in places that are otherwise mainly used for advertising purposes.

Not all poster motifs are shown
According to media reports, not all five topics will be featured by the companies. One is about “too explicit”. Artist Sargnagel was annoyed. On a poster by Giannotti you see a drawn penis with the question “Does that justice your violence?”. According to the initiators, not placing posters is contrary to the protection of children. Sargnagel showed little understanding for this, because then such motifs would also have to be banned from children’s books.

Also her own works, on which “In the fairy tale the prince kills the dragon. His ex in Tyrol.” and “Everyone kills their wife, nobody kills their boss.” be denied. It was also the intention that the motives would irritate and polarize, explains initiator Veronika Burtscher. Art is meant to spark a discussion about the increasing number of femicides and structural violence.
