The presidential elections are over. Tyrolean voters could choose from 785 polling stations, but one of them didn’t really exist – right in Innsbruck. The liberals are critical.
A reader of the “Tiroler Krone” who wishes to remain anonymous is amazed. As a resident of constituency 101 in Innsbruck, he was informed that the 2022 federal presidential election would take place on Sunday at his responsible polling station at Leopoldstrasse 15/MS Leopoldstrasse.
“Incomprehensible, shaking head, irritated”
“I went there around 8:50 am but found the doors closed. There was also no indication that the polling station would be located elsewhere. No corresponding information was found at the second entrance to this school at the beginning of Michael-Gaismair-Straße, which is currently inaccessible due to a construction site,” says the “Krone” reader. Other people who wanted to vote also stood in front of this “polling station”: “Some left the scene without understanding and shook their heads, some annoyed.”
Was the “Krone” reader wrong? “No, in my election information, the building at 15 Leopoldstrasse is clearly identified as the polling station for districts 100 to 103,” he emphasizes. So at 9:52 a.m. he tried again to open the door of the school – without success. “I met other voters who left without achieving anything.”
The actual polling station was on the construction site
Meanwhile, in Michael-Gaismair-Strasse – a side street of Leopoldstrasse – a yellow paper with the inscription “Wahlsprengel 100, 101, 102 and 103” was attached to the construction fence, barely visible. “Finally I was able to find this polling station on the construction site between the houses Michael-Gaismair-Straße 4 and 6 with ‘MS Ilse Brüll Gasse’.”
He drew the attention of election workers to the fact that this misinformation could lead to problems for several districts of Innsbruck. “One of the gentlemen said there was a similar problem in the state elections on September 25. But I was abroad at the time. Another gentleman accompanied me to the building at 15 Leopoldstrasse and confirmed that there was no indication of the actual polling station. He wants to arrange the relevant agreements immediately.”
“Even at 12:12 and 14:52 still no clues”
At 10:30 am, several “polling stations” signs were attached to the railings of the construction site on Michael-Gaismair-Strasse. “However, there was still not the slightest indication at the actual polling station at 15 Leopoldstrasse – not even at 12:12 am or later at 2:52 pm,” he says. The “Krone” has pictures and times.
“Embarrassing mistake by the city of Innsbruck“
The Tyrolean is convinced that “this embarrassing mistake by the city has deprived a number of citizens of the opportunity to vote correctly”. There was no statement Wednesday evening from the city of Innsbruck or the district and municipal authorities.
“That’s too bad”
Freedom finds critical words for it. “It is really unbelievable. Apparently those responsible in Innsbruck, especially the green mayor Georg Willi, are not able to guarantee good elections across the board. Because according to the witness, the conditions were already like this during the state elections. a pity,” says FPÖ state party chairman Markus Abwerzger in dismay.
