Russian opponent Alexei Navalny died suddenly this Friday in the Arctic prison where he had been held since December last year, the Russian penitentiary services reported.
The European Union This Friday, he blamed Russian authorities for the death of influential Russian opponent Alexei Navalny while serving a sentence in a prison in the Yamalia-Nenets region, stating that the dissident fought for his values and that his fight for democracy does not end with his death.
“The European Union considers the Russian regime solely responsible for this tragic death,” European Council President Charles Michel wrote in a message on the social network X.
The Secretary General of the NATOJens Stoltenberg has assured that Russia must “answer very serious questions” about Navalni’s death and also demanded that Moscow establish all the facts about what happened.
The minister French of Foreign Affairs, Stéphane Séjourné, has stated that Navalny “paid with his life for his opposition to a system of oppression”, that of Vladimir Putin’s “regime”.
The chairman of European parliamentRoberta Metsola is “shocked” by that death and has assured that “Russia took her freedom and her life, but not her dignity.”
For its part, the Kremlin has said it has no information on the causes of the opposition leader’s death in prison, Russian presidency spokesman Dmitry Peskov said minutes after news of the politician’s death broke.
