Caught in ropes – suspension bridge collapses in Serbia – two dead

A pedestrian bridge fell into a river in Serbia on Thursday – the accident claimed two lives and injured ten. Two women died after reportedly becoming entangled in the ropes of the hanging structure.

The pedestrian bridge was located near the Serbian town of Cacak and led over the western Morava. When pilgrims tried to cross the river to visit Jovanje Monastery on the other side, she collapsed and swept 50 Bosnian tourists into the water.

Survivor: ‘I thought this was the end’
One survivor described the dramatic moment: “Suddenly the bridge supports began to break and come loose. I don’t know what was on my mind at that moment,” said Zlatokosa Palangetic. “I thought this was the end, that I was going to suffocate.” Finally she managed to swim to the river bank.

In addition to the fire brigade and rescue workers, 80 doctors were present. Overload is believed to be the cause of the accident.
