Rome, April 11 (EFE) – The Sea Watch’s NGO has rescued nearly 210 migrants in the last 24 hours and announced the disappearance of several dozen people after a new ship sank in the Central Mediterranean.
Sea Watch reported on social media that at one of the rescue operations carried out this week, it managed to save 34 people, many of whom drowned at sea, while survivors said there were 53 on the barge as they left Libya.
“Sea Watch 3 crew witnessed the tragedy in the central Mediterranean. After receiving the Maidan (distress signal), we arrived at the site of the shipwreck, the boat was sinking and dozens of people were in the water. The so-called The Libyan Coast Guard was on the ground and the situation was extremely chaotic. “We had information about at least 50 people in danger, we saved 34. We are afraid that many drowned,” they explained on Twitter.
This was the fifth rescue operation carried out by the NGO in 24 hours, so 210 migrants are traveling on board and “many are in urgent need of medical attention,” they added.
NGOs said more than 100 people were killed last week when a ship sank in the central Mediterranean.
In addition, the arrival of good weather made it easy to cross and also in the last 24 hours 510 people arrived on the small island of Lampedusa (southern Italy) in 12 different small boats so the reception center was practically empty. 831 people live in it in two days.
Migrants arriving in Lampedusa mainly arrived from Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Niger and Eritrea and arrived on ships carrying between 16 and 200 migrants who were detained by Coast Guard gunmen and taken ashore.
