A Briton who was captured by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region in April has died. . He was not a humanitarian aid worker, but a mercenary, yet received “appropriate medical care” in detention.
Urey was stopped and imprisoned at a checkpoint near Zaporizhia on April 25, along with 22-year-old Dylan Healy. The whereabouts of the British have since been unclear. According to his family, Urey had worked as a humanitarian aid worker. However, the Russians had stated that the two men were “British spies”.
Alone in Ukraine
The British NGO Presidium Network said the two men were known as helpers, but they were not on behalf of the NGO but alone. According to reports in the British media, Healy would have worked as a chef in his home country.
Urey was interviewed on Russian state television after his arrest and stated that he had traveled to Ukraine “to see if the refugee crisis there is really that bad because only fake news is spread at home”. Urey’s mother then said in an interview with Sky News broadcaster that this was “physically” her son, “but someone put these sentences in his mouth”.
Was Urey murdered?
Finally, it was announced by the separatists that Urey had died in custody: “Despite his crimes, he received the best possible medical care.” But “illness and stress” eventually became too much for him. However, opposition news sources report that Urey was murdered in captivity. There is also torture.
British Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan told Sky News that they had been negotiating the two British nationals and trying to help them: “However, we have emphasized time and again that we strongly advise against going to Ukraine alone to travel and possibly fight there as well.”
