The death toll in the fire at the infamous Evin prison in Tehran has risen to eight, according to Iranian authorities. Four other inmates have died, the judiciary announced on Monday. So far, there had been official talk of four deaths. All the victims came from the wing of the facility where prisoners were to be held for theft.
According to the authorities, a fire was set on Saturday after a fight between several inmates.
Evin Prison has been repeatedly criticized internationally for alleged serious human rights violations. Prisoners are held there for political reasons, among other things.
US involved
The United States has expressed concern about the dramatic situation. “We are following reports from Ewin Prison with great urgency,” US State Department spokesman Ned Price tweeted Saturday. “Iran is fully responsible for the safety of our wrongfully detained citizens, who must be released immediately.”
protestwelle
Iran’s leadership has been facing a nationwide wave of protests since mid-September. The reason for this was the death of 22-year-old Kurd Mahsa Amini. She was arrested on September 13 by the vice squad in Tehran for allegedly violating the rules for wearing a headscarf. She died three days later.
