Numerous arrests, nationwide bewilderment: a serious case of abuse is causing horror in Greece. A 12-year-old girl was not only raped several times by a 53-year-old man, but also offered on the internet. The man was arrested last week and since then suspects have been arrested almost daily who allegedly abused the child. According to Greek media, a fifth suspect was arrested on Monday.
An end to the arrests is not yet in sight, as a total of 213 men are said to have contacted the man online about the girl. The alleged main perpetrator is a 53-year-old who runs a shop in Athens.
Girl helped in the store
The girl is said to have always helped there and was mistreated by the man between April and August. In addition to the rape and assault charges, the man is also being investigated for human trafficking, pimping and illegal possession of weapons.
What did the mother know?
The role of the girl’s mother is unclear. In the Greek media, citing police sources, it is suspected that the 37-year-old may have been aware of the events and therefore may also have to answer to a pimp. The woman was brought before the examining magistrate on Monday.
