Oil barriers installed – environmental alarm in Weiz: 3000 liters of oil leaked

Date:

On Monday, about 3000 liters of mineral oil from an industrial company in Weiz (Styria) ended up in the sewer due to an accident. As a precaution, four oil barriers were erected in the Weizbach.

The incident happened around 7:20 a.m. During pumping operations, a technical problem occurred which caused the oil to leak out and flow into the canal. As a result, it is likely that the majority of discharges have reached the nearest sewage treatment plant, where appropriate safety measures can be taken in a timely manner.

Because it could not be ruled out that some of the oil could also end up in the Weizbach, an environmental alarm was activated. The Gleisdorf fire brigade responded with an oil-damaged vehicle and the Styrian Chemical Emergency Service also intervened.

As a result, a total of four oil barriers have been built on the Weizbach, which will be continuously monitored over the next few days. Much of the oil probably flowed through the sewer. The operation lasted a total of seven hours and involved 28 firefighters with ten vehicles.
