While FPÖ politician Herbert Kickl talks about ‘Fortress Austria’, liberal posters advertise ‘Burgenland instead of Tomorrowland’ and calls for tight borders for asylum seekers, the question remains: would the Austrian economy survive without migration? Krone+ has ventured into a calculation example.
In November 2022, the limit of 8 billion people on this earth was crossed for the first time. And the population is growing every second. But the end of the growth seems to be in sight. For the first time since 1950, the annual increase leveled off at less than one percent. In 2022 that was only 0.8 percent. It is unclear how the world population will further develop. Some experts estimate that the peak will be reached in 2046 with 8.6 billion people, after which the population will decline to 7.3 billion people in 2100.
