Because a holidaymaker’s smartwatch sounded the alarm in the Silvretta Montafon ski area (Vorarlberg), the emergency services started a large-scale search for the man. However, it was only a false alarm…
On Tuesday afternoon at 4:42 p.m., the control room received several emergency calls from a smartwatch. After the owner of the watch did not respond to attempts to call the control center, an accident had to be assumed. With the help of an emergency survey, the search area was limited to an area with a radius of 2.5 kilometers in the Silvretta Montafon ski area.
However, a large-scale search by mountain rescue services, mountain railway employees and the Alpine police was unsuccessful. The air police also found no traces in the area from the air or found a person in distress. At the same time, residents of holiday homes in the valley were interviewed and a search was made for parking spaces for a possible abandoned vehicle. At 6:30 PM the search was finally called off without results.
Calls ignored
The watch owner’s personal information could eventually be obtained through the mobile phone operator. These have been compared with the guest data via the municipality. A holidaymaker in St. Gallenkirch was eventually identified. The 70-year-old man from America had returned safely to his place of residence for some time. He didn’t notice the emergency call on his watch and simply ignored the numerous calls on his cell phone.
