According to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens), EU countries agreed on Monday on sanctions against Iran’s moral police. The aim is to hold accountable those responsible for brutal crimes against women, youth and men, the politician said on the sidelines of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.
The list of sanctions published Monday in the Official Journal of the EU lists 11 officials and four organizations, including the Revolutionary Guards cyber unit and the moral police. They are subject to an entry ban and their assets in the EU are frozen.
The new sanctions target individuals and organizations blamed for the recent crackdown on protests in Iran. The news portal “The Pioneer” had previously reported that representatives and departments of the security forces – including the moral police – had been hard at work against the protests for weeks.
National protests against compulsory headscarf
Security forces had recently cracked down on people demonstrating nationwide against the government’s repressive course, the headscarf requirement and the government system.
Iran has been rocked by violent protests for a month. They were triggered by the death of the young Kurd Mahsa Amini. The young woman died on September 16 under unclear circumstances after she was arrested by the vice squad for her alleged “un-Islamic outfit”. Critics accuse him of using violence. The moral police vehemently denied the allegations.
