Since the war in Ukraine, the EU has been producing a record amount of renewable electricity

Date:

According to a study, since the start of the war in Ukraine, the European Union has produced more electricity from wind and solar than ever before. Between March and September, nearly a quarter of the EU’s electricity came from solar and wind energy, according to a study by the organizations Ember and E3G on Tuesday. Last year it was 21 percent in the period compared to 24 percent this year.

A total of 345 terawatt hours came from the two renewable sources – an increase of 39 terawatt hours from 2021.

Records in 19 EU countries
According to the study, Germany has reached a record 104 terawatt hours of electricity from solar and wind since March. That corresponds to about a third of all electricity. According to the analysts, a total of 19 EU countries have set records in electricity production with the two renewable energy sources – such as France, Italy, Poland and Spain.

The record production saved the EU about €11 billion in gas purchases, it said. “Wind and solar energy are already helping European citizens,” says Chris Rosslowe of Ember. “But the future potential is even greater.” The EU’s plans to accelerate the energy transition in view of the war in Ukraine should be implemented by EU countries and the European Parliament. Negotiations are currently underway.
