“Peaceful Places” – market, park, apartment building bombed to rubble

Date:

The Russian army also bombed Ukraine on Tuesday evening. As in previous days, air raid sirens were issued across the country over massive missile and drone strikes. Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Mykolaiv were particularly hard hit, where a flower market, a park and a residential building were reduced to rubble. The region’s governor, Vitaly Kim, called the attacks, which killed at least one civilian, “terror against absolutely peaceful places”. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said of the bloody attacks: “The Russians continue to do what they do best: terrorize and kill civilians!”

Mayor Ihor Terekhov also reported rocket fire in the city of Kharkov. “There were two series of explosions in the city within five minutes,” he said. According to initial findings, an industrial company was affected. The subway stopped train service and resumed operations as a protective bunker. Mayor Vitali Klitschko also reported new explosions from the capital Kiev.

Emergency power supply in hospitals
Explosions have been reported in Krivy Riy and in the regional capital Dnipro in the Dnepropetrovsk region. The power supply in the northern Ukrainian city of Zhytomyr was cut after Russian airstrikes. “There is currently no light or water in the city,” Mayor Serhiy Sukhomlyn wrote. The hospitals have switched to emergency power. Before the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, about 260,000 people lived in Zhytomyr.

In Mykolayiv, emergency services have recovered a man’s body from under the rubble, Vitaly Kim said. With the flower market and the chestnut park, other “absolutely quiet places” were shelled and destroyed.

Clouds of smoke over many cities
Russian military bloggers close to the Kremlin also reported on the shelling of numerous regions – and posted numerous photos and videos showing clouds of smoke over cities on social networks intended to document the new attacks. The authenticity of these recordings, which were also distributed via Ukrainian channels, could not initially be verified.

Russian bombing of Ukraine
Ukrainian armed forces said several attacks had been repulsed. The government in Kiev is demanding even more anti-aircraft systems from the West for air defense against Russian attacks with drones and missiles. Russia had recently intensified shelling in the war against Ukraine that had been going on for nearly eight months.

Focused on the Ukrainian energy grid
According to British military experts, attacks with Russian missiles and kamikaze drones in Ukraine are most likely targeting the country’s energy network. Russia has continued a high level of long-range strikes on targets in various parts of Ukraine since October 10. “It is most likely a primary objective of this action to cause widespread damage to Ukraine’s energy network,” intelligence agencies said on Tuesday.

Zaporizhia NPP employees kidnapped
The operator of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine accuses Russia of kidnapping two high-ranking employees of the occupied nuclear power plant. It is not known where the two are and how they are doing, Energoatom says on the short message service Telegram. The state-owned company said it was the head of the IT department, Oleh Kostyukov, and the assistant to the director of the nuclear power plant, Oleh Oschek. The two were arrested Monday.

Since Moscow’s setbacks on the battlefield over the summer, British experts have seen a greater willingness to attack civilian infrastructure in Ukraine in addition to military targets.
