Attack at school – Afghan women protest for education

Date:

Women protested for their right to education in the Afghan capital Kabul on Tuesday. The main reason was an attack on a private school in Kabul, in which more than 50 young people were killed.

Most of the dead and more than 100 injured were girls. Since the attack, people across the country have taken to the streets for greater equality, often led by young women. On Tuesday, about 30 protesters in front of Kabul University demanded access to education again, while accusing the international community of forgetting about women in Afghanistan.

Protests brutally shattered
Videos of the protests were posted on social media, with local media saying the ruling Taliban had brutally broken up. They dragged demonstrators away, there are said to have been shots and arrests. Students at Kabul University even accused the Taliban of poisoning them to prevent them from protesting. The Taliban, in turn, rejected this. According to local media, the students were evicted from their dormitories after the demonstrations.

Since the Taliban came to power in August 2021, girls from seventh grade have only been allowed to attend private schools. Women are allowed to go to universities. However, there are fears that this could change. Recently, a private school in Kabul was attacked by Shia Hazara. More than 50 people died and more than 100 were injured.
