Chase – First accident ended wild smuggler’s escape

Date:

To evade the police, a people smuggler stepped on the gas and raced through Hungarian and Burgenland towns at breakneck speed. Neckenmarkt was the end of the line.

Another incendiary incident involving a tugboat nearly ended in injuries. The people smuggler was driving a car with German number plates on Hungary’s M85 highway in the morning when Hungarian and Burgenland police patrols noticed him.

With Tempo 120 through the city
When the driver left the highway in his white VW Sharan near Harkau (Hungary) – not far from the border with Burgenland – Hungarian officials decided to stop the car. However, the blue light did not have the desired effect. Instead, the tug panicked and hit the accelerator. He accelerated the vehicle and raced through Harkau at speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour and then towards the state line.

The people smuggler also did not step off the gas on the Burgenland side. Arriving at the Neckenmarkt, he thundered through the village at 100 km/h. A hiker who was just crossing the street could only save himself by jumping sideways to avoid being hit by the towing vehicle.

Seven refugees on board
A few meters later, however, the flight came to an abrupt end. The driver hit a curb with a front tire and suffered a flat tire. It was impossible to continue driving and he had to stop the car. The police were then able to arrest the smuggler. As it turned out, he hadn’t been traveling alone. The family van was filled to the last seat. The people smuggler had crammed seven refugees into the car. The men could not provide any papers for the officials, they all applied for asylum.
