After the vote of no confidence in Imran Khan, Pakistan’s parliament has now elected a new prime minister. Opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif takes over ailing government amid political crisis. Mass protests and the announcement by several members of Khan’s party that they now want to resign were accompanied by the change of office.
Dozens of MPs left the plenary hall in protest against the vote on the successor. In the end, 174 of the 374 MPs voted for Sharif. His predecessor Khan was removed from office on Sunday night by a vote of no confidence.
This was preceded by a days-long political crisis in the South Asian nuclear power. The former prime minister came under increasing pressure due to the severe economic crisis in the country. The broad opposition alliance mobilized against his government for two years. But Khan also suspects that the US is behind his downfall.
