The European Commission is taking the first step towards the integration of Moldova and Georgia into the European Union

Date:

This was done by the President of the European Commission in Kyiv on Friday. Ursula von der Leyen handed over a questionnaire to President Volodymyr Zelensky, by which the community executive body evaluates membership applications. In Kyiv, von der Leyen promised Zelensky to speed up public exam deadlines. The expertise then goes to the council – the governments – which have the final say in the enlargement process.

A number of Georgia and Moldova met this Monday. EU Commissioner Oliver Varhel handed over two questionnaires to Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Moldovan Niko Popescu.

“The first step. “We are ready to go very fast, so the sooner you finish it, the sooner we can give our opinion to the Council of Europe,” Varheli wrote on Twitter.

Political support for Moldova and Georgia comes after von der Leyen issued a statement in Kyiv on Friday: “We are on your side in the European dream. Vladimir, my message today is very clear. Ukraine belongs to the European family. We have heard your request loudly and clearly. And today we are here to give you the first positive answer. This envelope, dear Vladimir, is an important step towards EU membership. The questionnaire that is here is the basis for our discussion in the coming weeks. This is where your path to Europe and the European Union begins. This questionnaire, which I am going to give you, needs to be answered, because these are questions that will further shape the EU’s opinion as a recommendation to the Council. We are ready to help you finish 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We know a lot about each other because we have been working very intensively together for the last few years. So, as usual, it will not be a matter of years to form this idea, it will be a matter of weeks if we work closely together. ”
