If it was a coincidence, then a very strange one and the fourth in just a month: The fire on two garbage islands in a residential complex in Linz-Auwiesen kept the professional fire brigade of Linz and the volunteer fire brigade of Ebelsberg busy on Tuesday evening. Two injured people are in hospital and one suspect is in the crosshairs of investigators.
“Two islands of waste were set on fire. One was under a passage where smoke was rising to the left and right towards the apartments. People couldn’t get out because the smoke was pushed up through the open arcades. When you opened the door of the apartment, smoke immediately came out,” Johannes Metzger, head of operations of the professional fire brigade of Linz, reports about the extinguishing operation around 9:45 p.m. Two residents had to be taken to hospital with suspected smoke poisoning.
FF Ebelsberg also removed it
The professional fire brigade was deployed with 23 men and six vehicles and was supported by the FF Ebelsberg, which was deployed with 14 Florianis and two vehicles. After 20 minutes the fire was declared out and the operation was over after an hour and a half.
Not the first incident
The fire brigade’s stomach ache is that the arson at the two waste islands on Kreiskystrasse – the second was 50 meters away – was not the first such incident in Auwiesen. “A month ago there was a fire nearby,” says Ebelsberg commander Manuel Studener. On February 18 around 5 a.m., several waste containers also burned and three waste rooms completely went up in flames. One person was handed over to the Red Cross. On March 10, garbage islands also burned down – the neighborhood is already talking about four arsons.
Description of perpetrator
This time, however, a man was seen acting suspiciously before the fire broke out. There is a vague description of him, but the police still hope it helps: man, around 55 years old, wavy white-gray hair, white-gray full beard, black coat.
