A new EU law against illegal content on the internet recently requires major online platforms to produce regular “transparency reports” on their efforts.

Major online providers are facing huge fines
The so-called Digital Services Act (DSA) came into effect in August. Very large online providers face huge fines if they do not take action against disinformation, hate speech and copyright infringement. Tiktok and 18 other platforms fall into this category because they have more than 45 million monthly users in the EU.

TikTok says in its first report that it has launched a tool to allow European users to report illegal content in accordance with DSA obligations. In the first month, 35,000 reports were received for 24,000 videos. Action was taken against 16 percent of these videos.

6125 “Content Moderators”
Of the 6,125 ‘content moderators’ on TikTok, about a third edit videos in English. German-speaking and French-speaking employees follow in second and third place. The team consists of speakers of the EU’s official languages, as well as widely spoken other languages such as Turkish and Arabic.
